Selective. A series of selections by some of our favorite artists, friends, connoisseurs & conspirators.
For the last two years, Good For You has built an internationally recognized brand that has delivered over 30 releases in the top 10, three reaching the overall #1 position and seven #1’s in total. Good For You label boss, KENNY SUMMIT gets Selective with a few stories behind some of the label’s biggest records.
This was the 1st release on Good For You Records, a collab with Justin Schumacher who is the 1st artist I signed to the label. We started the GODDAM KIDS duo with the intent to produce some ill disco house joints and its been a nice project so far.
This is the 1st jam i got to work on with Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper. it will always be special. I was driving to Kupper’s studio in CT from NYC and I had the radio on to a 60’s radio station and came up w the idea for the record from two old songs they played. Yasmeen got free reign to write whatever she wanted and I think she knocked out the vocal in ONE TAKE. A truly amazing singer and super under rated in my opinion. The track went #1, my 1st time having that happen and it felt AMAZING.
This was just a fluke in my opinion, but this track also went #1. Wasn’t intending on releasing this, but after putting it up on soundcloud and getting 10,000 plays and 800 downloads in like 1 week, I removed it from soundcloud and put it up on traxsource. It was #1 for a while and was the #4 track of the year as well.
I am a firm believer on things happening for a reason; I linked up with Tom Gianelli at last years ADE and went back to Amsterdam later in the year to work with him. He is one of the most talented producers I’ve had the pleasure to sit in a studio with and I’m super excited about the collaborations we have coming up. This is his first solo release on GFY and it just makes me feel good knowing he is my partner in crime.
Frankie Knuckles was in the process of getting this song cleared for release with Queen Latifah’s permission when I jumped the gun and release it without telling him. He loved this record and when he said “I’m gonna ask Dana if she would like to use it as the theme song for her TV show”, I completely flaked and didn’t realize DANA is Queen Latifah. Just an example that you should listen to your mentors / elders and if there is any miscommunication, quickly clear it up and clarity anything you might not understand.
